授業の主題（テーマ）

西洋起源の事物の由来をたどることにより英語圏の言語と文化に触れることを目指す

授業の目標（講義概要）

私たちは西洋文化という広大な枠の中で日常生活を営んでいる。このことは意識する、しないにかかわらず事実だ。しかしこれらがすべて明治以降の百有余年間にほぼ完全に日本社会に定着した事実を思うと、改めて西洋文化の持つ強い浸透力に驚きを禁じ得ない。当授業では我々の周囲の身近な事物の由来をたどり、意外性を味わうことを目指す。思いがけない起源を知ることで諸々の事物により親近感が湧くものと信ずる。

授業計画

以下のトピックに沿って進めていく。 1. The Calendar and Holidays ◇ Why don't all months have the same number of days? ◇ When did the world lose ten days? ◇ Where you living in the year 1408-and will you be alive in 5749? ◇ Hs an hour always had 60 minutes? 2. The origins of numbers and customs ◇ Where did our numbers come from? ◇ What is the most important number? ◇ Why was the meter invented as a system of measurement? ◇ How old is the kiss? 3. Inventions and Inventors ◇ When was the first wristwatch made? ◇ How old is the safety pin? ◇ When was air-conditioning invented?

評価方法

出席状況のほか、授業中の指名結果も考慮する。しかし二回の定試も重視する。
